The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Commerce recently announced a joint Environmental Technologies Export Initiative that the agencies say will help create new jobs by facilitating exports of environmental technology, products, and services.

The Initiative will feature an informational web-based portal to be launched later this year. The portal will provide potentially relevant government information to companies that make environmental technology and products or provide related services.

According to the EPA, the U.S. environmental industry produces revenues of about $312 billion annually. The agency reports that the industry employs about 1.7 million workers.

The joint EPA-Commerce initiative grows from President Obama’s National Export Initiative, announced in March, which seeks to strengthen the U.S. economy and promote job growth by doubling exports by 2014.
